What’s in a Name?

As the story goes, when I was a young kid, I woke up to find a big (to my eyes at least) praying mantis on my bed. How it had gotten into our house? Who knows…

When I saw this lovely creature, my eyes got wide and called out for help, clearly in need of saving. My dad, Doug, came swooping in, wrapped it in a sheet and took it outside, releasing it into the wilds of Easton, Maryland.

From then on, whenever we’d see praying mantises we’d retell the story of my rescue, usually laughing because the praying mantis probably wasn’t as large as my kid mind thought it was.

Then, in 2014, we lost Dad after a 5 month battle with pancreatic cancer. After he died, we began seeing praying mantises EVERYWHERE. And, in the years since, we tend to see them from time to time, typically when we need them (and probably him) the most.

So, Mala (term for prayer) Mantis (for my daring rescue) is in his honor. Seeing the name reminds me of him, and acknowledges the importance of how much he supported my brother and I, just like I hope to support others.
